The Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC's Beneficial Management Practices (BMP) Program covers a portion of the cost of switching from fossil-fuel equipment to electric — including solar-powered systems.
We help BC farms navigate the application from start to approval. You focus on your farm — we'll handle the paperwork.
The current BMP program runs under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2028. Applications are reviewed on an intake basis — don't wait.
The Energy & Fuel Efficiency category specifically funds the replacement of fossil fuel-driven equipment with electric alternatives — which includes solar-powered systems on your farm.
Project activities should not commence prior to approval of your application. Retroactive costs are not eligible. Contact us before you begin anything — we'll make sure your timeline works with the application process.
If your eligible solar project costs $80,000, the IAFBC BMP grant would cover 30% = $24,000. Your out-of-pocket cost would be $56,000 — before any net metering savings begin reducing your energy bills.
The cost-share ratio is 30% unless otherwise specified by the program for a particular activity. Maximum grant per project is $50,000.
Most working BC farms qualify — here's what you need to have in place before applying.
You must have a valid EFP less than 5 years old that reflects your current operation. If yours is outdated, we can help you understand the renewal process. A grace period may apply for 2025/26.
Your farm or ranch must be in British Columbia and have valid "Farm Class" land as designated by BC Assessment, or be a First Nations agricultural operation.
You must have a valid business GST/CRA number and be a taxable entity — individual, corporation, trust, partnership, or cooperative.
Your main farmstead must be located in BC and you must file farm income tax (form T2042 or T1273) under the Income Tax Act in BC.
Electric motors must be rated as energy efficient per Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulations. We ensure every system we install meets this requirement.
Applicants can only apply for each BMP activity (practice code) once per fiscal year. Plan your application timing carefully — we can help with this.
Lifetime cap to be aware of: A per-farm lifetime funding cap of $100,000 applies across all BMP categories for the Sustainable CAP period (April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2028). If your farm has previously received BMP funding, that counts toward this cap. We'll check your eligibility as part of our free assessment.
The BMP application process has specific steps and timing requirements. We've done this before and we'll guide you through it.
We visit your farm, review your energy situation, and confirm grant eligibility before anything else.
Create your IAF Client Portal account and register your organization. Allow 2 business days for validation.
We help prepare your application with all required documentation before the intake deadline.
IAF reviews applications. Do not start your project until you receive written approval.
We install your system within the approved project window. You submit invoices and receive your grant payment.
Sign up for the BMP newsletter. Intake dates open and close quickly — sometimes within days. Newsletter subscribers get advance notice.
Renew your EFP early. It can take months to renew. Don't let an expired EFP hold up your application when a funding window opens.
Don't start work early. Retroactive costs are not eligible. Get approval in writing before a single panel goes up.
Check your lifetime cap. Previous BMP funding counts toward your $100,000 lifetime limit. We'll verify this upfront.
We'll check your eligibility, explain exactly what funding you could access, and handle the application alongside your installation.
